No Exit: Your New Favorite Thriller

The temperatures are lower than my shoe size and I’m feeling winter’s effects. The only thing that makes winter a little more bearable is the copious amount of reading time. Who can judge you for staying in when the alternative is icy torment. If you love a good book on a cold day I have just the page-turner for you.

I received No Exit by Taylor Adams in my Book of the Month subscription box and I didn’t really know what to expect. I love thrillers, but they are especially exciting when the weather outside mirrors that of the book.

No Exit follows Darby Thorne, a college student with an odd hobby. Darby collects grave stone rubbings. We begin in Blue, Darby’s beat-up car, and are limping through a midwestern blizzard. Darby just makes it to a rest stop before getting stranded on the freeway. She has no idea what fate has in store for her when she steps through the doors of an ill-fated rest stop.

Darby is greeted by a cast of characters that are all waiting for the storm to pass. There’s Ed, a recovering alcoholic on his way to reconnect with his estranged family. Next is Sandi, a middle aged woman with a love of mystery novels. Then there’s Ashley, a charismatic college student with a penchant for children’s magic tricks. Lars, the most creepy of the group, is a rodent looking boy with questionable personal hygiene. All Darby has to do is make polite small talk until the snow plows arrive and she can continue on her way. However, everything changes when she meets Jay.

On a trip around the area to find cell service, Darby finds herself glancing into the window of a white work van. She is shocked when she sees the pale white hand of a little girl. Skeptical at first, Darby breaks into the van using a shoelace and finds that the owner of the van is holding this girl captive in a dog cage. Darby’s night instantly transforms into a life-or-death situation and every person in the rest stop is a suspect.

Adam’s ability to pace the novel throughout one night is phenomenal. The book unfolds into a plot filled with twists and turns. I pride myself on predicting the end of novels, but this one kept me guessing. Pick up No Exit and read it on your next “personal day.” You won’t regret it.
